When you shelve an herb or a spice, make sure it’s dark and cool. Heat, humidity, and light will all weaken your spices’ flavor. Usually herbs and ground spices tend to stay fresh for about a year. Spices that are whole will retain flavor longer, closer to 3-5 years. Store your herbs and spices correctly, so that they will stay fresh and keep their full flavor!

Try adding oil to foods from the sides of a pot or pan in able to jump-start the heating process. This will give your food maximum flavor when it is done cooking.

Garlic is one of those delicious ingredient that has a drawback; its flavor gets onto your hands. After you are done working with garlic and any other odoriferous ingredients, try rubbing your hands firmly on the inside of your stainless steel sink. This will remove the scent from your hands and stop it from transferring.

Keep in mind that tofu and beans are excellent sources of protein when you want to add more protein to your diet. Both can be purchased at just about any grocery store. Make a yummy meat alternative by pan frying the tofu with some seasonings. Beans boiled with herbs is a flavorful source of protein.

Sauteing vegetables in chicken broth is very healthy. The vegetables will take on the broth flavor, and reduce the oil that is used when sauteing. This makes for a delicious way to prepare veggies.

When you season food add a little at a time every few minutes rather than adding it all at one time. Then the foods absorb the seasonings rather than being caked with them.

If your dish calls for a bit of garlic, make sure the garlic is as fresh as possible. Fresh garlic has a sweeter taste. Garlic is fresh when it is firm, unbruised and has not shriveled up.

Make your own dried tomatoes. Dry your own by slicing ripe tomatoes 1/2″ thick, or cut Romas in half, lengthwise. Set them on a rack cut side up and sprinkle lightly with salt. Heat your oven to 190 degrees and place the tomatoes inside for as long as ten hours. Once done, you can store them in your freezer in plastic bags. Zing up your dried tomatoes and conserve them at the same time by canning them in olive oil and herbs. When refrigerated, they will last a minimum of two weeks.

Consider creating your own stock, in order to add some customized flavor to your dishes. Make as much of it as you want and keep the excess in your freezer. This ensures you will have tasty, homemade stock available when you need it for soups, stews and many other dishes. By making and having your own stock on hand, you will know it doesn’t contain preservatives.

Cooking for the family can be beyond overwhelming. Luckily, you can do a number of things to make cooking simpler. Don’t worry about cooking your next meal.
